Caring for Your Trees After Storms

Caring for Your Trees After a Storm

Summer storms can be rough for your trees.

The high winds and extreme rains of summer storms can play havoc on your landscaping, especially for your trees. Young and old trees alike can fall victim to summer’s wild weather, which is why it’s important to know how to care for your trees once the storms have cleared.

Carefully & Quickly Assess Damage

If the tree affected is one that has become a family favorite, such as a stately oak that’s lasted generations, it’s easy to get caught up in emotion. It will often be beneficial to call in professionals to carefully assess the damage with you to see if the tree can be saved. In some cases, you may need to act quickly – such as if the tree is threatening to fall onto your home, property, or any electrical lines. If there is no immediate danger, you will have the time to work with an arborist to decide on a line of action.

Consider What’s Best For The Tree

If the tree that was affected by the storm was healthy and relatively young, it might be able to recover pretty well. For instances of large limb loss a tree may need some significant pruning. After pruning the site of the cut may weep and will need to be monitored for insects and decay, but generally, it will scab over, and the tree will be able to recover fully. If multiple branches have been lost or broken you will want to remove them and then allow a monitoring period. If no further damage becomes apparent, you may follow up with pruning. On the other hand, if wilting leaves or dead areas become noticeable the damage might be more serious, and the tree may need to be evaluated by a professional. If the damage is extreme, such as damage to the trunk, or multiple large limbs it may be best to remove and replace it with a new tree.

Avoid Scams

In the aftermath of a massive storm, you might be approached by both disreputable and reputable landscaping service. While door to door canvassing for clients in areas of operation is something landscaping companies do, always take care before shelling out your hard-earned cash. There are plenty of scam artists who will offer to repair landscapes and perform tree removals. Always ask about licensing and make sure to check reviews before agreeing to any services.
