Spotted Lanternflies & Tree-of-Heaven in Maryland: Why Proper Removal Matters

If you live in Maryland, chances are you’ve already seen the growing problem with spotted lanternflies. These invasive insects have rapidly spread throughout the state, damaging trees, landscaping, vineyards, and outdoor spaces. One of their favorite host trees is another invasive species known as the Tree-of-Heaven (Ailanthus altissima). While many homeowners believe simply cutting these trees down solves the problem, improper removal can actually make the infestation worse. At Nelson Tree Specialist, Inc., we help property owners properly identify, treat, and remove Tree-of-Heaven safely and effectively.

What Is Tree-of-Heaven?

Tree-of-Heaven is an invasive tree species originally introduced from Asia. It grows aggressively throughout Maryland and is commonly found along roadsides, fence lines, wooded areas, vacant lots, and residential properties. This tree spreads extremely fast through:

  • Wind-dispersed seeds
  • Underground root systems
  • Root suckers that sprout from surrounding roots

Tree-of-Heaven is also the preferred host tree for spotted lanternflies, making it a major contributor to the spread of this invasive pest throughout the region.

Why You Should NOT Simply Cut Down Tree-of-Heaven

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is cutting the tree down immediately without treatment. Unfortunately, Tree-of-Heaven has an aggressive defense mechanism. When the tree is cut without first killing the root system, it responds by sending up dozens — sometimes hundreds — of new shoots from underground roots. This process is called root suckering. In many cases, cutting the tree without treatment can actually create a larger infestation than before.

The Correct Process: Treat First, Remove Later

Proper Tree-of-Heaven removal requires a strategic treatment process before the tree is removed. Industry experts recommend applying a systemic herbicide treatment first. The treatment is absorbed into the tree and carried down into the root system, helping kill the underground roots and preventing aggressive re-sprouting. After treatment:

  • The tree is allowed time to absorb the herbicide
  • The root system begins to die
  • The risk of massive re-sprouting is greatly reduced
  • The tree can then be safely removed

Research commonly recommends waiting approximately 30 days after treatment before removal to allow the herbicide to fully move through the root system.

Best Time for Treatment

Timing is critical when treating Tree-of-Heaven. The most effective treatment window is typically:

  • Mid-summer through early fall
  • Usually July through September in Maryland

During this period, the tree naturally moves nutrients down into its roots, allowing systemic herbicides to work more effectively.

Why This Matters for Spotted Lanternfly Control

Although spotted lanternflies feed on many plants, they strongly prefer Tree-of-Heaven. Reducing these invasive trees can help reduce lanternfly populations around homes and properties. Signs of spotted lanternflies include:

  • Large groups gathering on tree trunks
  • Sap leaking or oozing from trees
  • Black sooty mold forming on surfaces
  • Swarms around outdoor spaces during late summer and fall

If left unmanaged, lanternflies can become a major nuisance and contribute to plant stress and damage.

Professional Removal Is Recommended
