Your faithful old tree has finally fallen. Maybe it got too sick or it was struck by lightning. In any case, most dead trees are reduced down to stumps. After that happens, you might have an odd question: can a tree grow back from a tree stump?
The Root System
As hard as it is to believe, a tree stump can eventually grow back into a full-sized tree. That’s because the roots are still there. The only difference is that the roots are no longer active. There might be enough nutrients left in the root system to cause sprouts to poke out of the ground. Given enough time, the trunk of the tree will start to recover. Whether or not that actually depends on how well the sprouts grow.
Removing Sprouts
If the sprouts flourish, they will grow into a tree. If you don’t want a tree in that location, then it’s important that you get rid of any all and all tree stumps that are left in your yard. To do this, you’ll need to cut the sprouts off right below the soil. If that doesn’t work, take a look at where the roots and the stump come together and cut the sprouts away.
Covering the Stump
Cleaning up the stump and keeping it around can actually make it an interesting conversation piece. Put some potted plants on top of the stump to give it a pop of color. You can even add a birdbath if you want; this is a great idea if the stump is completely flat and level at the top. You can also put a bench in front of the tree stump to hide it from view or pick out a patio table you like and put it over where the stump is.
